How To Start A Fashion Blog

Where To Start A Fashion Blog

You may be tempted to start a fashion or beauty blog with Blogger or Tumblr because they’re free and you don’t have to buy a domain or web hosting, but let me tell you why that would be a huge mistake. While you may not view your fashion blog as a business, it will likely eventually become one.

If you are serious about becoming a successful fashion blogger, brands and marketing agencies will want to work with you. Your blog will be your primary marketing tool for every new project launch. Everything associated with your brand – you, your readers, Twitter and Instagram followers, Facebook fans, etc. – will all stem from the growth of your blog. Essentially, your blog will be your biggest asset. If you actually own and control your blog, domain and hosting, you can sell it in the future for a multiple of your earnings.

Unfortunately, if you start a fashion/beauty blog with Blogger, Tumblr or some other free platform, here are some of the issues you will face in the future.

    • “Free” means your blog’s address won’t be a custom name. That means you’ll be choosing a blog name like “” or “”. While you may not have issues with that initially, you are certainly going to want a custom blog name later, and that will require you to re-brand your website, social media accounts, email addresses, etc. The result may be a loss of traffic, fans, social media followers, and revenue. Avoid the headache and start with a professional blog.
    • “Free” means the platform “owns” your blog. As they say, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. When Tumblr, Blogger, Wix, or Weebly host your blog for free, they technically own it. You are simply “renting” space. If you, for any reason, violate their Terms of Service or they go bankrupt, you lose your blog and all your hard work. Simply put, you have limited control of your blog.
    • Free blogging sites lack design, theme and layout options. It’s harder, costlier, and sometimes impossible to customize a free blog, thereby handicapping your creativity. A fashion or beauty blog is supposed to be about freedom of expression – how can you do that when you can’t make your blog look the way you want?!

For these reasons, I highly recommend you start a self-hosted WordPress blog with BlueHost.

You know the professional fashion and beauty blogs you love to follow? They almost all use a self-hosted WordPress blog. And with BlueHost, who already hosts over 2 million websites worldwide, you will get a free domain and affordable web hosting. This offers you the opportunity to come up with a creative blog name and customize your website with different designs, themes, plugins, and layout options. The possibilities are endless.

Another advantage is that WordPress, which is the most popular blogging platform in the world, is incredibly powerful, straightforward and easy to use. In fact, I’ve built over 50 WordPress blogs in the last 4 years. If you’re serious about becoming a successful fashion blogger and making money online, you need to create a self-hosted WordPress blog.

In the “New Domain” box, type in the free domain name you want and click “Next” to see if it’s available. If the blog name of your choice is unavailable, you can choose one of the suggestions or type in another domain.

Once you have come up with a domain name that is available, you will need to input your “Account Information“.

Then choose the web hosting package and options you want. I recommend the “Starter 36 Month” option because you get the lowest monthly price, but you can also pick the “12 Month” or “24 Month” packages. You’ll still be getting the same type of hosting, but the rates are just different due to the time commitment. Just remember, BlueHost gives you an “Anytime Money-Back Guarantee”, so you can cancel your blog hosting and get a refund anytime you want.

I also suggest you skip the other add-ons except the “Domain Privacy Protection” because it keeps your personal information private. I highly recommend it and personally buy it with all my domains. (Please note that Domain Privacy Protection is only offered to customers who register a new domain with BlueHost. If you purchase a domain elsewhere, it will not show up.)
