MaxCDN - The Best WordPress CDN

MaxCDN, as the name suggests, is a content delivery network. MaxCDN is one of the most preferred affordable CDN providers for WordPress sites. It speeds up your site, and reduces your server load, for an affordable price. Setting up MaxCDN for WordPress blogs using W3 Total Cache is straightforward and easy. I’m using MaxCDN on TechTage since the beginning of 2013. Here’s why I’m more than impressed with its performance and features.

    Why Choose MaxCDN

There are lots of paid, as well free (CloudFlare) CDN services out there. Why should you choose MaxCDN?

    • MaxCDN’s start plan costs only $9/month and their plus plan costs only $39.95/month without discounts. The start plan offers 100GB bandwidth per month. It’s more than sufficient for medium-sized sites.
    • MaxCDN is very easy to set up and use. Setting up MaxCDN on WordPress sites using W3 Total Cache requires 5 minutes of time at most.
    • MaxCDN has data centers around the world. They have numerous servers (edge locations and peer locations) all over North America and Europe. New edge locations are planned in various parts of Asia.

Their plus plan is ideal for owners of a couple of busy websites. The business plan costs $79.00/month and offers 1TB bandwidth per month and supports a maximum 5 pull-zones (sites). There’s no storage limit. You can host as many static files of your site with MaxCDN, no matter how large they are. The 100GB/month bandwidth limit might seem less for some but TechTage has only used 40.96GB of all-time MaxCDN bandwidth thus far. On an average day, this site gets around 3,000 hits. The reason it uses less bandwidth is proper site optimization and caching.

    The Result

Before setting up MaxCDN, TechTage would take around 2 – 2.5 seconds to load, according to Pingdom. Here’s the current load time:

    How MaxCDN Works

If you’ve used CloudFlare before, you’ll find MaxCDN quite different. CloudFlare caches entire websites, and makes you use their DNS. MaxCDN works differently. Upon proper setup, MaxCDN pulls static resources, such as images, videos, css, javascript files, and various other files and stores in their datacenters. So, you won’t have to upload all your static files to MaxCDN’s servers manually. You get a custom URL to access your files on their servers, such as – techtage.rohitpalit.netdna-cdn.com. You can use CNAME redirection from cPanel to map that URL to a better looking one, such as – cdn.example.com.

Now, suppose you’ve set up MaxCDN on your site. Your static files URLs will be changed, so during page load they’ll actually be loaded from the closest (to the user) MaxCDN datacenter instead of your own server.

For example, suppose you had an image on your site with the url: example.com/2013/08/techtage.jpg

After you install MaxCDN, the URL will be changed to: cdn.example.com/2013/08/techtage.jpg

How to Setup MaxCDN on WordPress

As I’ve already mentioned in the beginning of this post, you can use a caching plugin called W3 Total Cache and set it up automatically. There’s a step-by-step guide on setting up W3 Total Cache and MaxCDN together. If you prefer WP Super Cache instead, there’s a way to set MaxCDN up alongside that, as well.

There you have it! You have MaxCDN, the best WordPress CDN, jacking up your site speed and taking care of your traffic spikes!

    Why Site Speed Matters?

Site speed is an important search engine ranking factor. It’s also one of the most important user-experience factors. Here’s how site speed affects search engine rankings. Overall, a faster site ensures more traffic, more user-satisfaction, more sales, more goals getting completed, and less bounce rate.

    Conclusion

I’m glad that MaxCDN had contacted us with their wish to sponsor us. It has cut almost half off our page loading times. Their network is always up. There hasn’t been a single instance where I found a css file not loading, or an image on the site loading partially.

In my opinion, the pricing is very reasonable. MaxCDN is a great solution for individuals and businesses alike, and certainly is one of the best Content Delivery Network solutions for WordPress users.
